Introduction: The horizontal bar graph compares the average percentages of income spending in two years which are fifty years apart (1968 and 2018)
P1: Changes involving apparent spending reductions from 1968 to 2018 included reduced expenditures on food by around 20%, a drop in payments made on clothes and shoes and personal goods by around half, and a slight fall in spending on fuel and power. The amount spent on household goods did not vary from one year to the next.
P2: By contrast, some changes involved increases from the earlier year to the later one. Both housing and leisure costs increased significantly. Transportation costs also appear to have increased but to a lesser extent than the previously mentioned areas.
Overview: Overall, in almost every economic area mentioned on the graph, there was a change in the distribution of income spent with the exception of household goods. The amounts spent which differed did so in a statistically significant manner.
